What is the main reason people have a Twitter account?

I know businesses have them to keep people posted on latest news, promotions, events, coupons and more. But for the average person, what's the reason for an account? Is it just to tell your friends what you are doing at all times? I'm just curious to hear everyone's responses.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Honestly, I have no reason why the average person has a Twitter account! Perhaps I'm in the minority about this, but I don't feel that anyone is really that interesting to support a Twitter account (how much can the average person really update the world on his/her day-to-day activities?).

I think Twitter got lot of hype because it's great for celebrities and businesses and for the occassional witty person so people signed up for it because it was the "in" thing to do. People started following people in an attempt to get others to follow them back and what resulted is a bunch of either 1) boring tweets or 2) spam.

The majority of what I've seen during my brief stint on Twitter was a bunch of people trying to sell products or promote their MLM scheme.

Although Twitter was originally for uses similar to IM and texting between friends, colleagues and acquaintances it has become an information sharing superhighway.

No matter if the Twitter user is marketing his or her business, nonprofit, club, group, website or blog, more likely than not he or she is wanting to share some information, particularly a link.

If you visit Twitter and pick out any random message (tweet) stream, you will find that well over 90% of the messages (tweets) contain links to some blog, website or social media site the person wants you to check out.

Also, a social phenomenon has occurred, in that Twitter has also become a worldwide (unofficial) popularity contest; the more Twitter followers (subscribers to your message stream) you have, the more "popular" you are. The last count, Lady Gaga was winning the "contest" with 6,384,845 followers.

Personally, I like using it to stay up-to-date on what friends are doing, and do some passive celebrity stalking! Sure I'm less interested in people who might be simply tweeting about what they're eating for breakfast or where they're getting stuck in a traffic jam, but there are people on Twitter with more interesting lives -- such as Obama, various athletes, singers, etc. It's nice to have the option of taking a sneak peek at what they're up to whenever I want.

Some of my friends also take advantage of giveaways from various companies. There are frequently retweet giveaways where your name gets entered into a raffle for something if you help promote their company with a simple retweet.
