How do lists work in Twitter?

I am still very new to Twitter and don't know much about the specifics of the site. Basically, all I do is tweet some of the questions I ask on websites and write some of the things I do during the day. I've begun to start to understand retweeting to an extent, but what I'm not sure about are lists. When I go to my profile, I see "Following," "Followers" and "Listed." Do I create the lists? Is this a way of categorizing the people I follow? Or does the "0" above the lists link mean that I am in no lists? Can someone explain this to me? What are the benefits of being on a list, or to creating one or several? How and why would I do this?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Lists allow people to only see the tweets by individuals that are on the list. The list creator adds people to the list and you can subscribe to the list, once you do it will appear in your right hand sidebar on Twitter. Clicking on those lists brings up only the tweets by people who are on the list. People use them to separate their interests. You can also put yourself on a list too.

Go to all the people you are following. You will see a list icon for all of their profiles. You can add them to a list you have created, or create new list to put them on.

As for what the use of these lists are, I don't know exactly. I think it allows you to easily share all the people you think are worth following to other people.

You can also utilize these lists in Twitter programs like Tweetdeck.

The number of times you have been put in a list will show up in "listed" if I'm not mistaken.
